As in past springs we returned to the Oregon Inlet Campground on Cape Hatteras. The Oregon Inlet was formed by a hurricane in 1846 which separated Bodie Island from Pea Island. The campground is small, with 107 campsites and is located along NC-12, 20 miles south of the town of Kitty Hawk, NC.

Whenever we travel through Kitty Hawk we always make sure to stop at two stores. The first is Duck Donuts. As the name suggests, Duck Donuts was established in Duck, NC. Featuring cake donuts, flavors range from the unexpected (Bacon in the Sun) to Sue’s favorite (French Toast). Duck Donuts now has more than 135 locally owned and operated franchises in 26 states, including close to home in King of Prussia and as far away as California. Even so, somehow, donuts tend to be a beach treat for us.

The Outlets of Nags Head is our second stop. You do know that shopping is an integral part of being on vacation, right😏? We usually stop at the Eddie Bauer outlet for outdoor clothing. Little did we know that the shopping complex would offer us a new experience this year.

How could we not check out a store called “Sugar Kingdom”. Joe was brave enough to risk Type 2 diabetes and walk into the store which was packed with sugary treats of all shapes and sizes. He was disciplined enough to leave with only two, rather large chocolate truffles.

We reached the Oregon Inlet campground around 3 PM and set up camp. Our reservation was for 5 nights but because we booked late we had to move our motorhome for four of those nights! Apparently, this campground is so popular that many campers must “campsite hop” daily as one volunteer noted. Having to move four times not as bad as it sounds since we keep our campsite set up to a minimum and the pads are level enough that we don’t use our leveling blocks. We just park the RV, put out our door mat and we’re home. If our chairs happen to be out, we just walk them over to the next campsite.

As it was the week before Memorial Day, the campground was quiet and relaxed. Most of the campers appeared to be retired, like us. There were a few families with young children but no noise, only the quiet peace of the seashore.

The weather was a mixed bag during our visit. The sun was strong but temperatures never exceeded 74 degrees. We also had a full day of rain totaling more than 1.5 inches and causing some coastal flooding concerns.

Fortunately, we had two wonderful afternoons with strong sun and temperatures in the low 70s so we could sit and enjoy the ocean and the shore birds. It is truly amazing how stress and worry seem to melt away upon listening to the breaking ocean waves and watching the pelicans gliding three in a row just above the surf.

Our drive home took us through Virginia to visit Williamsburg, Joe’s Mom, and the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Hope everyone had an enjoyable Memorial Day Holiday and spent some time remembering our fallen military.

We will have more about National Museum of the Marine Corps in a later post. We are home now and packing for an eight-week trip that will include the Canadian Provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
