Today is Tuesday, June 24, and we are still in Halifax when we had expected to be visiting Peggy’s Cove and staying in Graves Island Provincial Park. We had stopped by the grocery for some last-minute supplies late on Friday before checking into Shubie Campground in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Upon our return to the motorhome, we discovered this:

Yes, that’s one very large crack in our windshield. It was only half that size when we first noticed it. The origin point is a chip in the glass at the edge of the windshield that is masked in black, making the chip difficult to see. It got larger after cleaning the window. We had hoped that the windshield would hold up long enough for us to reach home at the end of July, but it was clear at this point it that it was not worth the gamble.

Fortunately, our friends at Shubie campground were able to find us a camping spot for two more nights as we waited for the first available windshield replacement appointment at Speedy Glass, which was not until Thursday. Hats off and eternal gratitude to Ryan who found a spot for us, and to all the friendly staff who helped us many times during our stay at the Shubie campground. Not only did they find us an available camping spot on a busy week before Canada Day (July 1), it is one of the nicest we’ve had in a long time. We have a large corner campsite with two shade trees that provide plenty of privacy. That’s a photo of our current site at the beginning of this post.
But that’s not the only good fortune we had today. We made our Thursday appointment online at Speedy Glass a few miles away in Dartmouth, NS. We thought we had better visit the shop to ensure everything was properly arranged, and we are so glad we did.
We drove the rig to the repair shop and met with the manager, Karen. She recognized that the wrong windshield had been ordered and redirected the correct windshield from nearby Moncton, NB. Then seeing we were traveling from the US, she moved our appointment to Wednesday, a day earlier.
We feel so blessed that two strangers understood our predicament and went out of their way to help us. Fingers crossed that the windshield repair goes smoothly tomorrow. However, whatever the outcome, we have learned that RV travel requires rolling with the punches!
UPDATE:
Wanted to let you know that our windshield was successfully repaired. Calibration of the lane-keeping sensors and speed limit sign camera took two tries but appears to be working well. We are grateful to Speedy Glass for their assistance, and we are happily back on the road!
