Biggest, tallest, deepest…

As we have traveled across the US and Canada we have been intrigued and amused by the many large sculptures and “world’s largest” claims, so we decided to collect them in this post.

Updates from our 2025 Travels

Collinsville, Illinois

The World’s Largest Catsup bottle is a water tower built in 1949 for the Suppiger catsup bottling plan. The 70 foot bottle sits on top of a 100 foot tower. The best view of the bottle is from highway 159 which made it difficult to capture a good image. Read more about this here.

Nackawic-Millville, New Brunswick

World’s Largest Axe. Erected in 1991, this axe symbolizes the importance of the Forestry Industry to the province and the designation of Nackawic as the Forestry Capital of Canada. The Axe is 49 feet tall.

Shediac, New Brunswick

World’s largest lobster (almost). Built as a tribute to the lobster fishing industry, it is 36 feet long and 16 feet tall. It is sculpted from concrete and weights 90 tons. There are two larger sculptures located in Hubei, China (#1) and Kingston, South Australia (#2).

2024 Updates

East Newark, OH

Founded in 1973, The Longaberger Company, was a manufacturer and distributor of handcrafted maple wood baskets. The company headquarters, completed in 1997 at a cost of 30 million, was build in the shape of one of its most popular products, the medium market basket. Longaberger was acquired by CVLS, Inc in 2013 and went out of business in 2018. The building is vacant.

Peoria, IL

This “Rooster in a Top Hat” may not be the largest Gallus gallus domesticus statue in the world but he is certainly well dressed.

Paul Bunyan, Bangor, ME

The statue was a gift to Bangor, ME on its 125th anniversary in 1959. It was built by the Messmoo & Damon company. The statue stands 31 feet high and weighs 3,700 pounds.

Shep – The World’s Largest Semi-Palmated Sandpiper, Dorchester, NB, Canada

The Shepody Bay attracts a large number of migrating semipalmated sandpipers. Made of steel and fiberglass the statue is a 7.9 feet in height and weights 298 pounds. This is the second Shep installed in 2023. It replaced the original wooden sculpture which stood from 2001 – 2020.

2023 Updates

Giant Watering Can, Alexandria, VA

Located outside the “Holly, Wood and Vines” Garden Center, this watering can sculpture is approximately 30 feet tall and water pours out of its spout onto a large “clay” pot.

Large Chest of Drawers. High Point, NC

Located in High Point, NC, which bills itself as the furniture capital of the world, this 36 foot tall sculpture pays homage to the local furniture manufacturing industry. Joe was relieved to see that not all the drawers were closed – just like his dresser at home. There is an even bigger-biggest dresser located outside of Furniture Land South in Jamestown, NC which is 85 feet tall.

Apple Sculpture, Winchester, VA

As we drove through west-central Virginia on our way to Replacements, we noticed that apple farming is a large part of the agriculture we could see from the highway. Winchester is the home of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. There are 20 other apple sculptures located throughout the town.

2022 Updates

Jolly Green Giant in Blue Earth, MN

He is 55.5 feet tall, his smile is four feet long, and he wears a size 78 shoe!

Redwood National Park, home of the world’s tallest trees.

Redwoods grow up to 380 feet tall and 16 to 18 feet across.

World’s largest Holstein in New Salem, North Dakota

Salem Sue, the world’s largest Holstein cow sculpture. At 38 feet high by 50 feet long, she overlooks North Dakota’s wide-open farmlands stretching to the horizon. The non-bovine Sue (lower left) is 5.5 feet tall.

The world’s largest buffalo in Jamestown, ND

This 26-foot-tall, 60-ton concrete buffalo, named “Dakota Thunder” in 2010, was constructed in 1959 and has kept watch over the Jamestown community ever since.

Ear of Corn Water Tower in Rochester, MN

This 50-thousand-gallon water tower was built in 1931. The tower is 151 feet tall and the ear of corn is 23 feet long. It was the largest until 1973 when the Giant Corn Gazebo was constructed in Olympia, MN, coming in at 25 feet for the very purpose of being the largest and beating the ear of corn in Rochester.

World’s Largest Six Pack in La Crosse, WI

We learned recently that these beer holding tanks that each hold 688,200 gallons of beer, are presently getting a facelift!

The World’s largest fiberglass bike in Sparta, WI.

Bull’s Head Sculpture In Montrose, SD

The sculpture is 60 Feet tall.

Worst tsunami disaster in US history in Crescent City, CA.

Crescent City, CA is the site of the worst tsunami disaster recorded in US history. The 1964 tsunami started with a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in Alaska that culminated in a 21 foot wave that crashed into the downtown, killing 11 people and devastating 29 city blocks. The threat of tsunamis continues today as evidenced by this campground evacuation trail sign.

Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the USA and one of the most pristine on Earth.

Certainly one of the most beautiful and awe inspiring places on Earth!

We don’t see this selection in Pennsylvania.
