Bones Distillery, Washington, PA

As with so many of our trips, the first leg of our journey was heading west across Pennsylvania. We usually stay at Bella Terra Vineyards, however we were traveling on a Saturday and Bella Terra doesn’t accept Harvest Hosts on the weekends. That led us to choose Bones Distillery in Washington, PA and we are so glad we did!

The distillery is just two years old and offers a variety of distilled spirits including vodka and rum (both flavored and unflavored), whiskey (moonshine), cream liquors and an agave-based spirit that does not meet the technical requirements to be labeled as Tequila.

Located in downtown Washington, PA, the distillery is in a building that formerly housed the Simon White’s Sons Monument Company. We assume so, but didn’t ask if the former tenant had any influence on the name of the distillery.

You can still see the name of the monument company on the rear of the building.

Cocktails and samples are available in a cozy lounge located just down the hall from the distillery room. We enjoyed the Moose Shakes (a cream liqueur made with an ice-cream base), Cold brew (coffee flavored liquor) and whiskey. If you order a mixed drink, be sure to ask for the custom ice cube in the shape of the Bones logo (see the featured image above).

The Bar

As with many of the micro-distilleries we have visited, the production room is just down the hall from the tasting room. Our host, Glen, was more than happy to show us his distilling set-up. Pennsylvania residents can order spirits from Bones Distillery and have them shipped to home.

Mashing, fermentation and distillation take place here

We spent a quiet night in the distillery’s parking lot next to Railroad Avenue—thankfully, no trains on the adjacent tracks(!)—and had a quick walk to church in the morning. The gravel lot that was fairly level. Entry to the parking lot is through a wide side alley off of West Maiden Street. If you are in a long RV or towing, check with the host to see if you can enter via the rear entry on Railroad Ave. This Harvest Host normally does not serve food. While there are restaurants within walking distance, they close early.

Despite driving by Washington, PA for many years, we had a lovely visit and are so glad we stopped by this time.

Cheers!
