Alum Creek State Park

We are visiting family in Columbus, Ohio and staying at the closest campground, Alum Creek, which is just 30 minutes north of Columbus in Delaware, OH. Coincidentally, we purchased our first camper van the OnTour 2.2 at RCD RV in Delaware, Ohio in July 2020.

Alum Creek State Park is centered around the man-made Alum Lake created in the early 1970’s from the damming of the Alum Creek. Boating and fishing are the primary attractions although it is a nice area for birding and relaxing outdoors.

In addition to visiting Sue’s family, one of the other highlights during this stay is hearing the many different bird songs at our campsite. So close to the water, it is almost like we are living amongst the flocks, which we guess we are. Sue has fond memories of hearing the robins in her maternal grandparents’ back yard and awakening to “When the Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along” on the radio each morning.

The park offers 237 electric-only (50-30-20) sites and 37 full-hookup sites. If the site is listed as a “premium site”, it looks out onto the lake. There are also cabins available for people without RV’s. The park is dog-friendly.

Sites are paved and reasonably level. At the entry to the campground is a dump station that will handle two vehicles simultaneously and two, fresh water fill stations. We had good coverage from our Verizon 4G hot spot so we didn’t have to use our Starlink mini.

Sites are well spaced and private. There are multiple boat launch sites available in the park so canoeing and kayaking are popular activities. Alum Creek State Park is much nicer than most Pennsylvania State Parks we have visited. We paid $130 for 3 nights.

Be aware that Ohioans take Ohio State Football very seriously. Don’t wear yellow or anything mentioning Michigan while staying at this campground. Trust us! Sue’s Father and Uncle attended OSU along with several other family members so she was not allowed to even say the word “Michigan” growing up. We were Buckeyes all the way!

Thanks for following along.
