Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Regina, SK

It’s not often that a border crossing agent provides sightseeing guidance, but this museum was recommended to us as we crossed into Canada at Portal, ND. In response to the customary border crossing question ‘Where are you planning to visit?”, we told the Customs agent that we were heading to the T-Rex Discovery Center in Eastend. He replied that we must go to see Scotty at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Regina. And so we did!

Scotty is the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil as yet discovered. Uncovered in 1991, it took 20 years to excavate. Scotty was discovered by Robert Gebhardt, a high school principal from Eastend, Saskatchewan. He accompanied a team of palaeontologists from the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) on an expedition not far from Eastend. He found a tooth and a vertebra which led to the discovery of the T-Rex fossil.

This life-sized replica of Scotty was the main attraction for the students who were on a field trip to the museum. They especially enjoyed pressing the buttons that made the fossil roar.

The museum also has amazing dioramas depicting the four ecozones (Taiga Shield, Boreal Shield, Boreal Plain, and the Prairie) in the Saskatchewan province. We spent a couple hours walking through the exhibits as the taxidermy was quite impressive and we learned a lot.

The lower gallery of museum is dedicated to the history and traditions of the Indigenous people of Saskatchewan. The Lakota, Dene Cree, Assiniboine, Saulteaux and Dakota all lived on the land that became Saskatchewan.

Admission to the museum is free although donations are requested. We had no problem parking our 23 foot motorhome in the surface parking lot. Short trailers should be able to park. We highly recommend visiting the museum while in Regina, which is the capital of Saskatchewan.

We didn’t record the Customs agent’s name, but we are very grateful for his recommendation!

We are staying in Regina, the capital city of Saskatchewan. The city has a population of just over a quarter million people. We will be touring through Saskatchewan for the next 10 days. There is a lot to see and do, and we look forward to sharing it with you.
