Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint in Terrebonne, OR

We are on our way to Crater Lake driving south on Route 97. Just a few miles after we left the Central Oregon KOA, we found this Scenic Viewpoint high above the Crooked River.

View of the Crooked River

This Scenic Viewpoint was named for Peter Skene Ogden, born in Quebec. Ogden was an Explorer for the Hudson’s Bay Company. He discovered the Crooked River during his survey of what is now Oregon.

There are three bridges which span the Crooked River Canyon. One is a railroad bridge owned by the BNSF Railway. The Oregon Trunk Line also runs on these tracks. Completed in 1911, this was once the second-highest railroad bridge in the United States at 320 feet high. This bridge is still in service.

The second bridge (green colored, in the foreground) is know as the Crooked River High Bridge. Built in 1926, it stands about 295 feet above the canyon. This bridge is no longer in service for automotive traffic but is open to foot traffic.

The current bridge was opened in 2000 to accommodate more traffic.

If you travel here with pets or small children, please closely supervise them and keep them on leash (Of course, we mean the pets). The drop-offs into the canyon are steep and unprotected in some areas.

The scenic overlook is an actual rest stop with accommodations for travelers. There are bathrooms, picnic areas and walkways where you can stretch your legs. There is parking for 25 cars and 6 RV truck parking lanes. Expect to spend 30-60 minutes enjoying the spectacular views.

We will be passing through Redmond and should reach Crater Lake National Park by tomorrow. However we have one stop before Crater Lake.

Thanks for stopping by!
