Sleeping with the Pando

We last visited Fish Lake National Forest and the Aspen Clone in early spring 2022, prior to the campground being opened. At that time, we swore we would return during season to camp among the Aspens and hear the quaking of the leaves. We did so this year during “shoulder” season and even got a glimpse of the fall yellow for which Aspens are renowned. We will definitely return in the Fall next time!

You may recall from our last visit, the Pando is the largest Aspen clone discovered-to-date. It spans over 106 acres, weighs nearly 5,900 tons (13 million pounds), and has 43,000 identical stems. The clone’s estimated age is 80,000 years. We were by ourselves for long stretches of our walks – just the wind, this amazing clone and us.

As we visited, we were reminded that fishing and hunting are big in this part of Utah.

Shouldn’t that be no shooting within 600 feet of people?

Next stop is Bryce Canyon. Happy Fall everyone!
