Geographic Center of the Nation

Belle Fourche, South Dakota holds the distinction of being the “Geographic Center of the Nation.” This was true until Hawaii was admitted to the union in 1959. After Hawaii was added, the geographic center of the US shifted approximately 20 miles out of of Belle Fourche. The actual “Geographic Center of the Nation” is on private land and is not accessible.

So while we were not exactly at the geographic center, there is a sign and a huge plaque demarcating Belle Fourche as the “Geographic Center of the Nation”. Considering the road trip we are on is around 8,000 miles, we consider 20 miles a rounding error. So we feel comfortable saying the we visited “Geographic Center of the Nation” and that is “truthy” enough for us!😉

What Joe and Sue believe the actual geographic center of the nation looks like.
